Initial draft of human genome sequence assembled, providing a road map to the genes on every chromosome.

Fuji in Japan develops shirts containing vitamins that are absorbed into the body when worn. Next year you may choose your clothes by nutritional value as well as colour, size and style.

A genetically modified mouthwash in clinical trials holds the promise of eradicating tooth decay. Tooth decay occurs when oral bacteria convert sugar into lactic acid. The lactic acid erodes tooth enamel resulting in tooth decay. A University of Florida team has genetically modified a common oral bacteria strain by deleting its lactic acid producing gene sequence. The modified bacteria displaces existing bacteria but doesn't produce lactic acid - hence minimal tooth decay.

Regulatory approval of nuclear plant life extension proceeds forward in United States, allowing utilities to consider operational lifetimes of 60 years for nuclear plants. Of the 103 reactors in the United States, 8 have received regulatory approval for 20 year life extension, and applications for life extension at 14 additional reactors are under review by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Lionel Morrison becomes the first pilot to save both himself and the aircraft by deploying an emergency airframe parachute from his Cirrus plane when he encountered control difficulties near Dallas, Texas. Cirrus is the only aircraft manufacturer with an airframe parachute as standard equipment.

Future business, plant operations, and technology trends characterized via industry peer survey to establish key influences on future control centre needs and capabilities.

Two papers discussing control centre design principles and opportunities for improvement to validation practice of human-machine systems were presented at the annual Canadian Nuclear Society conference.

Instruction in CANDU control room alarm system configuration and operational use was presented to AECL design staff in September.

Three validation exercises for the Dedicated Isotope Facility at the AECL Chalk River Laboratories were completed in October through December. The exercises involved assessment of the adequacy of operational practices for emergency response with minimum staffing, waste gas storage and transfer, and alarm response.
