Control Room Compensatory Actions - Common Workplace Workarounds

Matthews and Davey. 2007.

Abstract: Control room operations in CANDU nuclear power plants are designed to support effective and safe plant operations. However, ongoing changes to work requirements, workplace conditions, tools, or resource availabilities can lead to the need to perform some operations away from the reference conditions established by design intent. To successfully achieve operational goals in such situations, Operations staff may have to undertake compensatory actions to overcome the mismatches between task needs and work capabilities introduced by the changes. These instances of the application of compensatory actions are called 'workarounds' and generally represent situations of less effective, efficient and safe operations.

This paper will describe common 'workarounds' routinely practiced in CANDU control room operations, explain the need for their application, outline the operational and business impacts, and discuss the factors that promote or constrain their elimination.
